Sam is trained in Part I of EMDR therapy and plans to become fully certified in the next year. She utilizes aspects of internal family systems therapy (IFS), trauma-informed therapy, and feminist theory in her integrative approach to counseling. Sam is certified in the Neurosequential Network’s Neurosequential Model in Education (NME), created by Bruce Perry, which provided her with in-depth training on early childhood trauma, the ways it impacts the developing brain, and how to work with youth on building new pathways for healing based on neuroscience. Sam’s graduate school research has also focused on bisexual erasure, and she presented her research at the 2021 All Ohio Counselor’s Conference. With a continual focus on understanding important aspects of holistic health and wellness, Sam incorporates her own inward practice of yoga, mantra meditation, yogic breath-work (Kriya), silent retreats and the mindful exploration of self and nature.
Sam obtained her master’s in public administration from Ohio University in 2013, and her bachelor’s in Human Ecology with the specialization of Human Development and Family Studies in 2008 from Ohio State University. In addition to working as our wellness office manager, Sam is a counselor in training at Stella Luna Counseling and Wellness and is a third-year graduate student obtaining her second master’s degree in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Cleveland State University. Sam serves as co-chair for the Ohio Counseling Association’s Graduate Student Committee. Prior to becoming a counselor in training, she had a career in the non-profit sector for 14 years, working in the areas of homelessness, food insecurity, and primary education.
